RESEARCH INTERESTS AND PUBLICATIONS – up to 2024
Conducted research in the broad areas of biodiversity and ecosystem management, water resource
management, community participation in resource management, indigenous knowledge practices,
sustainability practices in development planning, ecotourism and recreational area management,
wetlands in water purification, renewable energy (biomass), monitoring and evaluation of projects,
climate change
mitigation and adaptation, forest silviculture and management, agroforestry,
propagation of forest tree species and tree improvement.
With the emphasis on climate change and the mitigation potential of forests and trees, I focused my
attention to climate change mitigation in my recent research projects as shown below.

Established, managed and monitored the Sri Lankan trial of the international provenance trial of
Casuarina equisetifolia in collaboration with WINROCK INTERNATIONAL – F/FRED based in
Bangkok and CSIRO, Australia.
Tree growth and soil nutrient relationship to be fed into the model MPTGro
Carried out research to look into the interrelationship between tree growth and soil nutrient status of
different aged Eucalyptus camaldulensis in a variety of climatic and soil conditions in Sri Lanka in
1992 as part of the international research on the subject to be fed into the already formulated model of
Multipurpose Tree Growth Model (MPTGro) by WINROCK INTERNATIONAL
Establishment of windbreaks in Mahaweli System B
Designed, established and monitored two windbreaks with farmers participation in Mahaweli system
B for Mahaweli Economic Agency and Mahaweli Agricultural Development Project (MARD) of the
USAID. Further to the actual establishment, training programmes were conducted on various
environmental perspectives to officers of the Mahaweli and farmers.
Establishment of a riparian forest on either side of Kuda Oya in Mahaweli System B
Designed, established and monitored a riparian forest with trees and shrubs for conservation and also
with a utility value with the participation of farmers in Mahaweli System B in collaboration with a
group of scientists for Mahaweli Economic Agency and MARD Project of USAID .
Collaborative research on Clonal Multiplication of Lunumidella (Melia dubia) with the
University of Edinburgh, UK
Carried out a collaborative research work on the clonal multiplication of Melia dubia in collaboration
with the University of Edinburgh under the USJ – UCNW (University of Sri J’Pura and University of
North Wales, Bangor) Link Project funded by the ODA of the UK . Developed a tissue culture
laboratory in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science to enable further research along
the lines of micropropagatoin for both staff and students in the Department.
Research on Tree Biotechnology in Yale University, USA
Developed a method for vegetative propagation of Teak (Tectona grandis) by tissue culture in
collaboration with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in Yale University, USA. This
was done during the period of my Fulbright Fellowship.
Effective management for biodiversity conservation in Sri Lankan coastal wetlands
Collaborative research on effective management of mangrove ecosystems in Muthurajawela Marsh
and Negombo / Chillaw Lagoon with Centre for Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources,
University of Portsmouth, UK. And University of Moratuwa. This was funded by the Darwin
Initiative, UK.
